What is the Latin American poultry market doing, and how far can each figure be trusted?

Public poultry figures for Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Chile and Brazil, read from each official source as soon as it publishes. Every figure states where it comes from, whether it was measured or calculated, and which defects were found in it. When the source fixes them, the flag disappears on its own.

How to read each figure

Every figure carries two marks. The first says what kind of number it is; the second, what was found when reading it. A calculated number never appears as "without caveats", even if nothing was found in it.

Measured
Official survey, census or price collection with a published method.
Administrative record
Comes from a record kept for another purpose (a levy, an inspection). It counts real events, but only those that pass through that record.
Calculated
Calculated by the source (or by this site, and stated) from other data or from assumptions. It is not a measurement.

Sources are re-read automatically every six hours. Each publishes at its own pace — monthly, quarterly, yearly — and says so next to its figure, along with the time of the last read.

Country pages are in the language of each market.

The five countries, measured the same way

National figures cannot be compared with each other: each country measures its own way. These can, because one organisation estimates them the same way for all five. They are estimates, forecasts and projections, not measurements, and they are not checked against national figures: they measure different things (ready-to-cook weight, all poultry).

FAO also publishes comparable figures for the five countries, but its terms forbid using them on a site that promotes a product without its written permission. That is why they are not here.

The figures in dollars

They are our conversion, to compare across countries: each figure is divided by the average exchange rate of the SAME period as the figure (the August price, with the August average dollar). Using today’s rate, a price that stayed still in local currency would seem to move just because of the exchange rate. Where a period has no rate, no dollar figure is shown.

What no country publishes

Measured feed conversion, mortality, weight for age and EPEF. No public source in the region publishes them by region or by company; what circulates under those names are assumptions from costing models. Those indicators only exist where every flock is recorded: inside each operation.
